(Former) Director of Music
John recently moved on to another position after eight years of service to FUMC. We offer him our most sincere thanks in his new endeavors. Gail Leinos is now serving as the interim organist and Tom Mullikin as the interim Choir Director. We are in the process of seeking a new Director of Music. As the Director of Music, John Devorick is responsible for coordinating all of the many music ministries within First Church. This includes several children’s choirs, a youth choir, special adult ensembles, and six hand bell and hand chime choirs. John also directs the Sanctuary Choir, which provides music during Sunday services, and occasionally serves as the organist.
John has been serving churches with his musical talents for more than three decades. He was the Director of Music for St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Mechanicsburg from 1977 to 1989, and the Camp Hill United Methodist Church from 1990-1993. He then joined the staff of Wesley United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg for two years as the Organist and Choir Director before joining the staff of First Church in September 2000.
John has a long career in public education. He was a music teacher with Shepherdstown and Upper Allen Elementary Schools in the Mechanicsburg Area School District from 1989 to 2005, before joining the staff of Red Land High School in the West Shore School District where he continues to serve as a music teacher.
John has a degree in Music Education from West Chester University, and a Master’s Degree in Liturgical Music from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He completed additional graduate studies at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, and University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
John is father to two grown daughters. He and his wife Marilyn reside in Monaghan Township.
